Tips for Maintaining Tier 4 Final Portable Air Compressor Engines
Date: May 27, 2019
Author: Nav Sharma
Proper maintenance of Tier 4 Final Atmos portable air compressor engines is essential for ensuring reliable performance, reducing emissions, and extending the life of your equipment. With the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 Final regulations now in effect, rental companies and fleet managers are transitioning to newer diesel-driven engines designed to meet these stringent standards.
As rental centers re-fleet, diesel mechanics and operators must stay informed about the latest advancements compared to previous Tier engines. Just as importantly, training customers on the proper use and care of Tier 4 Final Atmos compressors helps avoid costly downtime, emergency service calls, and customer dissatisfaction. A simple instruction card with key maintenance reminders can go a long way toward improving user experience and ensuring repeat business.
Understanding Tier 4 Final Atmos Compressor Engines
One of the biggest changes in Tier 4 Final diesel engines is the move from mechanical to electronic controls. These controls not only improve performance but also incorporate advanced diagnostics and after-treatment systems designed to reduce harmful exhaust emissions.
After-treatment systems typically include three main technologies:
- Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC)
- Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)
- Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)
Most small to mid-size portable Atmos compressors will use one or two of these technologies. Here’s what operators and technicians need to know about each system:
1. Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC)
The DOC works by burning off excess hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, converting them into carbon dioxide and water. The DOC system is generally maintenance-free, requiring no replacement or cleaning, and is designed to last for the life of the engine.
2. Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)
The DPF traps soot from engine exhaust and burns it off, leaving behind ash. Over time, the filter requires cleaning or replacement.
- Engines 175 horsepower and above: DPF cleaning required every 4,500 hours.
- Engines below 175 horsepower: DPF cleaning required every 3,000 hours.
It’s critical for operators to understand the control panel warning lights and switches to effectively manage DPF regeneration. Failure to respond promptly to alerts can lead to unnecessary downtime.
3. Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)
The SCR system uses a urea and water solution—commonly known as Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)—to convert nitrogen oxides into harmless water and nitrogen.
Key tips for SCR and DEF maintenance:
- DEF consumption is about half to one-third of diesel use, but it’s best practice to refill DEF tanks whenever you refuel diesel.
- Keep DEF tanks available at service branches and on mobile service trucks.
- Train operators to include DEF checks as part of their daily pre-shift inspections.
Technician Training and Diagnostic Tools
Tier 4 Final Atmos compressors rely heavily on electronic systems. Technicians must be well-trained to use updated diagnostic tools and troubleshoot fault codes effectively.
- Electrical connections: Many warning codes can be traced back to loose harness connections. Checking and tightening connections often resolves errors quickly.
- Control panels: Provide early warnings that can prevent major breakdowns if acted upon in time.
- Training: Mechanics should receive factory-level training and stay updated on different engine manufacturer requirements.
Best Practices for Maintaining Tier 4 Final Atmos Compressors
- Read and understand the user manual before operating or servicing.
- Provide customer training to minimize misuse and maximize uptime.
- Incorporate DEF and diesel refueling together as part of daily maintenance.
- Monitor and respond to warning lights to prevent derating and downtime.
- Schedule timely DPF cleaning based on engine horsepower and usage hours.
